Build a Smart Deck

Create a Smart Deck that gathers cards by rules like due status, streak, last practiced, images, decks and folders, and updates itself.

A Smart Deck in Swiftflip is a deck built from rules instead of by hand. You set the rules once and it stays current as your cards change. This guide shows how to build one. See the Smart Decks overview for more examples.

Smart Decks are a Premium feature. Swiftflip also includes a built-in Due for Practice deck that gathers every card due across your library.

Adding rules and watching the match count update.

Create a Smart Deck

  • On iPhone or iPad, tap the add button and choose New Smart Deck.
  • On Mac, press Command Option N, or use the add menu in the sidebar.

Choose your rules

A Smart Deck pulls in cards that match the rules you set. You can combine these:

  • Due for Practice: include or exclude cards that are due
  • Card Streak: more than, less than or equal to a streak count
  • Last Practiced: more or less than a time you set, like 7 days ago
  • Has Images: front image, back image, both or none
  • Selected Decks: cards from decks you choose
  • In Folders: cards from folders you choose

For example, due cards from your Spanish folder, or cards you have not practiced in two weeks.

Match all or match any

Choose whether a card has to match all of your rules or any of them. Match all narrows the deck. Match any widens it. As you change rules, Swiftflip shows a live count of matching cards so you can see the effect right away.

Edit it later

A Smart Deck is not fixed. Open it and edit the rules whenever your study needs change. On Mac the shortcut to edit the selected deck is Command Shift E.

What Smart Decks do not use

Rules are based on practice and structure, not on free text or tags. There is no tag rule, no search-text rule and no date-created rule. To group decks by hand instead, use folders.
